About this camp
Lakota Youth Development in Charles, SD offers summer programs for ages 12-18 focused on Lakota culture. Experiential camps teach Lakota equine life skills and leadership training through Project Venture programs. Activities include cultural events and nature-based learning. Past sessions
Youth get to make and take home their own tradition Lakota Long Bows along with arrows. Bow safety and target practice also takes place.
Learn more / RegisterActivities focus on the 4 core principles of traditional Lakota Leadership and equine life skills certification. Youth also learn about Lakota History and how it affects us today in present times.
Learn more / RegisterThis coming of age ceremony is conducted by the mother, grandmothers, and elderly grandmothers of the community. The girls are taught the roles and responsibilities of a Lakota woman and how they are to take on those roles and carry these teaching throughout their life.
Learn more / RegisterThe youth art contest took place in May. Tusweca Mendoza, 14, won first place and a cash award of $300. Angel Benson came in second with a cash award of $200. And Mahpiya Eagle Hunter, 8, was third with a cash award of $100. The judges recognized these three young artists based on their creativity/originality, connection to the theme, and artistic skills. They were allowed to create their work in any medium.
